Description

Colossal Ring Opening Pliers

A heavy-duty tool for opening larger-gauge body jewellery rings — segment rings, captive bead rings, and other ring styles where the gap needs to be widened to insert or remove a ball, segment, or hinged closure.

These are precision pliers, not generic hardware tools. The jaws sit inside the ring and apply force evenly to spread the gap open, which means they need to be sized correctly to your ring before use. Setup is quick, and once set, the pliers do the work.

Specifications

  • Suitable for rings up to 8mm thick (gauge)
  • Adjustable to fit rings with an internal diameter of 10mm to 30mm, in 2mm increments
  • Allen key included for adjusting the jaw size
  • Solid steel construction

How to use

  1. Check your ring's internal diameter. This is the distance across the inside of the ring (not the outside). It's listed in the product description for every ring on our site.
  2. Set the jaws to match. Use the included allen key to adjust the jaws to the size closest to your ring's internal diameter. The pliers are marked in 2mm increments — pick the marking that matches, or the nearest one below it.
  3. Place the jaws inside the ring. The closed jaws should sit snugly within the ring, with the ring's gap (or hinge, for hinged rings) positioned between them.
  4. Squeeze the handles firmly. The jaws will spread outward, gently opening the ring at the gap. Apply steady pressure rather than forcing it.
  5. Insert your jewellery component (ball, segment, etc.), then release the pliers. The ring will return close to its original shape; finish closing by hand, or with closing pliers if needed.

Important notes

  • These pliers are rated for rings up to 8mm thick. Heavier gauges than this require industrial-grade tools and fall outside the product's specification.
  • Correct jaw sizing is essential. The pliers work through precision fit between the jaws and the ring's internal diameter. Without the correct setup, the jaws can't grip the ring properly and won't spread it open — no matter how hard you squeeze the handles. Always check the allen-key adjustment before use.
  • Heating rings before opening (in hot water or otherwise) is not necessary and doesn't compensate for incorrect jaw sizing.
